EXPLORER
What is it -The team is divided into two. One Part is based at HQ and they have to communicate instructions and information to their field members, who have no information or maps or clues. How good are they at giving and receiving instructions? Can they visualise what the field staff are facing? What happens when frustration sets in? Who is going to take a leadership role?
What you get out of it - This is a great activity for teaching accurate planning, accurate and timely communication. It is good for groups where staff don't always get to see each other. Perhaps a field sales team and their office bound administrators and logistics people. Swap the roles around to give each other a different perspective or mix up the groups so they get to know each other and how each other operate in different situations.
Ideal Location - There needs to be access to a large area where different modes of transport can be used, i.e. Mountain bikes, feet, kayaks. The HQ people should not be able to see the field team at any time, nor the terrain they are covering.
Ideal numbers - Minimum 12, Maximum 36
Duration - half to full day or even 2 days
More Info - Teams compete against each other in trying to complete a set course in the fastest possible time. The twist is that each team is divided into two with one team out in the 'field' (usually on mountain bikes) and the other based at HQ. Those out in the field have no maps or documentation and have to be guided around the course by those collecting clues etc back at HQ. This is a basic outline as the programme also includes a whole heap of twists and turns. An excellent communications exercise.
